Inspiring Appreciation for Our Heritage and Environment
Margaret Sheridan Harrigan grew up in Cohoes, N.Y. just before the turn of the 20th century. This autobiography shares her childhood memories of her life as the daughter of Irish-American mill workers. To help support the family, she left school at the age of 14 and began her own career as a millhand. Mrs. Harrigan describes her jobs and the labor conditions of the mills, in which she and her friend worked from 6 AM until 6 PM, six days a week. Mrs. Harrigan finds in these mills friendships that will never cease, even when her millhand days end. At the age of 23, she leaves the Mohawk Valley as the bride of Martin Harrigan, a farmer from Northern New York. Mrs. Harrigan's humor is evident as she describes her transformation from city working girl to wife and mother on the farm. Mrs. Harrigan's autobiography, short stories, and poems preserve the lifestyle of millhands and farmers that has become history. $24.95, shipping included (New York State residents add local sales tax)
