Her hardship is described in stories from the papers and oral traditions of her daughters Maggie and Josie. Maggie tells of life in Cohoes while Josie's stories come from Mattahwan, where her mother has sent her to live.

Margaret Sheridan Harrigan grew up in Cohoes, N.Y. just before the turn of the 20th century. This autobiography shares her childhood memories of her life as the daughter of Irish-American mill workers. To help support the family, she left school at the age of 14 and began her own career as a millhand.
